Elaine, who is usually my Co-pilot and Chief navigator, riding pillion on our trusty GL1800 has been searching for a Goldwing Trike over recent months as due to her small stature is unable to ride a solo Goldwing. Although she thoroughly enjoys riding pillion she has been searching for a way of riding a "wing" herself as she enjoys them so much.
After a few months of searching, today was the day we decided to take a trip way down South to Penzance, Cornwall in order to view and hopefully purchase a GL1500 trike.
With a friend driving, we eagerly set off early on the 407 mile journey which took us about 8 hours with 1 stop at motorway services for a stretch, comfort break and a bite to eat.
We drove through some torrential rain storms and navigated (slowly at times) through motorway roadworks with reduced speed limits and the dreaded average speed cameras watching us like hawks.
After getting over the shock of the high prices for a burger at motorway services we arrived safely at our destination and eagerly went to view our prostective purchase.
Then, disapointment!
Unfortunately, this trike was not in the cosmetic condition we were aiming for and following a little prodding and poking we found a number of mechanical faults including leaking fork seals.
We sadly declined to buy this trike.
With us feeling very dissapointed and quite tired we set off on the long, long journey home.
After battling again through the motorway roadworks we arrived back home in Skegness shortly after midnight, tired, aching and with Elaine as determined as ever to find her perfect Goldwing trike.
After a late start to Saturday Elaines' search for her dream Goldwing trike continued.
We thank our friend (you know who you are) for your time and advice.
And that leads to a top tip from us, The Skegness GoldWing Riders - Never buy a new ride on impulse or from just viewing photos. Make the journey, just as we did, no matter how far away your prospective purchase may be. Take your time, ask questions of the owner, prod and poke the bike and most importantly, trust your instincts, trust your gut feeling, buy with your head and not with your heart and be prepared to walk away if you have any doubts whatsoever.
Elaines' dream trike will come up for sale at some point and she will be first in the queue for a test ride!
